Summary
Konotori rice is grown in the Hyogo Prefecture areas of Toyooka City, Asago City, Yabu City and Kasumi Town as part of an effort to create an environment that is comfortable for storks, which are a nationally protected species. Konotori mean stork in Japanese. This rice is grown through a process called the “Konotori Hagukumi” farming method, which uses various techniques such as water management to make paddy fields easier to live in for living creatures, organic farming (or farming with reduced pesticides that are not very toxic to fish), and channel creation in the paddy fields that dig out escape paths for creatures. The process allows living creatures, like bugs, to grow easily, which the storks can feed on.
