概要 / Summary

本年、開湯１３００周年を迎える歴史ある山代温泉には、共同浴場「総湯（そうゆ）」を中心に温泉旅館が立ち並んでいた「湯の曲輪（ゆのがわ）」と呼ばれる町並みが今も残されています。約１４０年前の共同浴場を復元した「古総湯（こそうゆ）」は当時のレトロな趣きを感じながら温泉文化を体感できる温泉地のシンボル的な施設です。当時は多くの湯治客がこの共同浴場に通い周辺の温泉旅館に長逗留したと言われています。山代温泉は、この「湯の曲輪」に多くの文化人や著名人が訪れ、文化性の高い日本を代表する温泉地へと発展を遂げました。現代に再生されたこの街並みは、日本の温泉地の原風景と言えます。

This year marks the 1300th anniversary of the founding of the historic Yamashiro Onsen. The townscape known as “Yunogawa,” where hot spring inns once lined the streets centered around the communal bathhouse “Sōyu,” remains preserved to this day. The “Koso-yu,” a restored version of the communal bathhouse from about 140 years ago, is a symbolic facility of the hot spring resort where visitors can experience the hot spring culture while feeling the retro charm of that era. It is said that many visitors seeking therapeutic baths frequented this communal bathhouse and stayed long periods at the surrounding hot spring inns. Yamashiro Onsen developed into a culturally significant hot spring destination representing Japan, attracting numerous intellectuals and celebrities to this “Yunogawara” district. This townscape, reborn in modern times, can be considered the original landscape of Japanese hot spring resorts.
